Just a reminder that if you’re in NYC at any point during the holiday season, you simply must, must stop by the windows at Bergdorf Goodman at Fifth Avenue and 57th Street – as usual, David Hoey and his incredible team of artisans have created a truly spectacular holiday window display, carrying on a great New York tradition, one that dates back to the middle of the nineteenth century. This year’s theme is travel, and one would be very lucky indeed to travel to the exotic and imaginative places revealed here, dressed in finery from the marbled display floors inside this great retail mecca. Just the winged pagasus with a remarkable macrame saddle is worth the trip!
While you’re in the neighborhood, you might want to do what I make it a point to do every holiday season – walk the “B” Line – by that I mean the ersatz line you can walk from Fifth to Madison to Lex, enjoying the holiday displays at all the stores that start with the letter “B”…… Bendel’s, Bergdorf’s, Barnie’s and Bloomies. ( I thought up the “B Line” years ago as I wandered from store to store for retail therapy, later it became a great way to map out a shopping trip for all my out-of-town visitors…) All of these stores have displays worth seeing, whether for handmade artistic glories or to see the latest technical wonders interpreted into messages of holiday cheer…..and of course, who can resist the sheer genius and sophisticated humor of Simon Doonan’s foodie display at Barney’s? Fashionistas and Food Network junkies alike will marvel at the details in his windows as they mingle on Madison …….Happy Holidays !
